Practicing dentistry since 1998, Ronald E. Birnbaum grew up in downtown Manhattan,
just a few blocks from the South Street Seaport and
the World Trade Center. He attended
University in New York City, starting with a Bachelor
of Science in Geography. Afterwards, he attended Columbia
University, graduating with simultaneous dual degrees as a Doctor in
Dental Surgery and a Master of Public Health in 1998.
Newly armed with his D.D.S. and M.P.H., Dr.
Birnbaum did a year of residency in Dental Medicine at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in
Manhattan. After his residency, he joined the hospital
as a full-time Attending dentist and spent four years continuing to treat patients
in the hospital while
simultaneously teaching interns in the hospital's residency program
and training rotating dental students from his Columbia University alma
matter, where he is also Assistant Clinical Professor of Dentistry.
He also used his training in Public Health to participate in a study
researching genetic testing for periodontal disease and various
biostatistics studies on patient care for the hospital.
His many years at the hospital gave him something
that few dentists have as experience, working with the most complex
dental problems possible, often for patients who have
serious health problems. "Being called to the emergency
room at 3 AM to treat a life-threatening dental
infection or broken jaw" was typical life at the hospital.
Recent years have seen Dr. Birnbaum turn more
towards private practice, although he continues to maintain an
academic teaching position with the hospital and the Columbia
University School of Dental Medicine as he volunteers
teaching the next generation of dentists.
Dr. Birnbaum actively participates in the running
of the American Dental Association. In 2006, Dr. Birnbaum
was President of the Eastern Dental Society (the oldest
dental society in New York, founded 1885). From 2004 to 2007 he served
on The Board of Directors of the
New York County Dental Society. He was also Vice-President (2004),
Secretary (2003) and Treasurer (2002) of Eastern Dental Society.
Dr. Birnbaum is officially recognized and
designated by the Consulate of France in New York.
He is an avid amateur radio (ham) enthusiast
(WY1R), photographer and an even more avid cyclist. He
volunteers part of his spare time giving examinations for future ham
radio licensees and yes, still loves Geography (Google Earth is
great!)
You can feel confident that whatever your dental
needs, Dr. Birnbaum will be there to help.
