Ronald E. Birnbaum grew up in downtown Manhattan,
just a few blocks from the South Street Seaport and
the World Trade Center. He attended
university in New York City, receiving a Bachelor
of Science in Geography from the City University of New York in 1992.
Attending Columbia
University, he graduated with simultaneous dual degrees as a Doctor in
Dental Surgery and a Master of Public Health in 1998.
Dr. Birnbaum did a year of internship/residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in
Manhattan. After his residency, he joined the hospital
as a full-time Attending Physician. His duties included treating patients
at the hospital while
simultaneously teaching interns in the hospital's residency program and dental students from his Columbia University alma
matter, where he held the title of Assistant Clinical Professor of Dentistry.
He also used his training in Public Health to assist a study
researching periodontal disease and performed various patient care
initiatives and biostatistics studies on patient care, for the hospital.
His many years at the hospital gave him something
that few dentists have as experience, working with some of the most
complex dental problems possible, often for patients who have
serious health problems. "Being called to the emergency room
at any hour day or night to treat a life-threatening dental
infection or accident injury" is typical life at the hospital for
the dental practitioner.
Recent years have seen Dr. Birnbaum turn mainly
towards private practice, although he continues to maintain an
academic teaching position with the hospital as he volunteers
teaching the next generation of dentists. His current teaching
curriculum for residents and students include dental materials,
regulatory and compliance, dental office safety, insurance industry
standards and current topics in dental public health, among others.
Dr. Birnbaum actively participates in the running
of the American Dental Association. In 2006, Dr. Birnbaum
was President of the Eastern Dental Society (the oldest
dental society in New York, founded 1885). From 2004 to 2007 he served
on The Board of Directors of the
New York County Dental Society. He was also Vice-President (2004),
Secretary (2003) and Treasurer (2002) of Eastern Dental Society.
Of service to the French-speaking community, Dr. Birnbaum is officially recognized and
designated by the Consulate of France in New York.
He is an avid amateur radio (ham) enthusiast
(WY1R), photographer and cyclist. He
periodically volunteers part of his spare time giving examinations
for future ham radio licensees and returns every year to his high
school to motivate the students to aim for university and consider
becoming dentists.
You can feel confident that whatever your dental
needs, Dr. Birnbaum will be there to help.
